A deep near IR survey of the inner region of the Milky Way Galaxy was carried out in the JHK' bands in the year 2003 using the IRSF/SIRIUS facility with SAAO. Nearly 4*1 square degree field, covering the Galactic bulge and the inner region of the Galactic plane, has been observed. This survey is about two magnitude fainter than the DENIS and 2MASS surveys and the spatial resolution is better by factor of two and reaches beyond the red clump. Some of the results based on this survey will be discussed along with the use of the SALT facility for spectroscopic work on some of the relatively fainter peculiar sources detected.
