Novel technologies for ELT science cases
Novel technologies for ELT science cases

The science cases developed for ELTs and explored in this Symposium
generate a set of often contradictory requirements on the instrument and
systems performance. Trade-offs between contrast, spatial resolution,
spectral range, spectral resolution and field of view result in the need
for a suite of instruments, as with any telescope, but with ELTs the
specification of most of these instruments is very challenging. This
paper will describe the technologies which need to be developed to meet
these requirements and discuss where we need to be in terms of
technology readiness before we can commit to the design of such a suite.
In particular, I will discuss the need for smart focal plane
technologies, advanced optical components and novel detectors.
