The main science drivers for future ELTs will be commented on in terms of corresponding instrumentation requirements. As a reference we will review the main challenges emerged from the eight instrument concept studies made by ESO and its community for the 60-m to 100-m OWL project. The concepts include an extremely high accuracy velocity spectrograph (CODEX), a photometer exploring the quantum properties of light (QuantEYE), an interferometric imager (HyTNIC), a widefield nearIR imager operating at the diffraction limit (ONIRICA), a multiobject nearIR spectrometer (MOMFIS), a very high contrast exoplanet imager (EPICS), a midIR spectroimager ( TOWL) and a widefield submillimeter imager (SCOWL). Finally, the approach towards developing the enabling technologies required will be briefly addressed.
