SALT Inauguration
SALT will be officially inaugurated by President Mbeki on Thursday 10
November.
Details of the inauguration function have still not been finalised, but if
you have not received an official invitation then it is unlikely that you
will be able
to attend the event. However, special tours of SALT are being arranged for those
with an interest that extends beyond mere sightseeing. If you want
to participate in such a technical tour,
which would likely be on Friday or Saturday,
11/12 November or perhaps after the Symposium, over the weekend 19/20
November, then please contact Ms Nazli Mohamed, nazli@salt.ac.za, with an
indication of your preferred date(s). Travel arrangements will depend on
numbers, so it is important to indicate your interest as soon as possible.
Sutherland is a remote village some 360 Km by road, about 4
hours' drive, from Cape Town.
It has a population of a few thousand, and there is very limited tourist
accommodation. The nearest other place to stay is at least 100 Km from the
town.
The telescope is about 17 Km beyond the village.
Most people attending the inauguration will be transported
there and back within one day.
There is only very limited parking space available on site so private cars will
not be permitted there on inauguration day, and access to the site will be strictly controlled.
Further details will be posted as they become available, and some
information may become available on the
inauguration
web site.
