Time: 11:40 - 12:00

We discuss the establishment of the Southern Africa Regional Office of Astronomy for
Development (SAROAD) and the growth of astronomy in Zambia and the benefits/impact of
being an SKA partner country. The SAROAD is to be hosted at the Copperbelt University in
Zambia. When fully operational, the regional node shall comprise all SADC member countries
and out of region SKA partner countries in Africa. It aims at promoting cross-border
cooperation and collaboration in astronomy education; research and public awareness thereby
fulfilling the objectives of the IAU decadal strategic plan 2010-2020. The node has been
approved by the IAU and we are working to complete the procedures for its establishment
