Carel van Gend

Carel studied physics, completing a PhD at the University of Cape Town on the effects of finite temperatures on various coupling constants, using QCD sum rules. Since then, he’s worked primarily in software development, in both commercial and academic environments, and in subjects as diverse as computational biochemistry, immunology, medical physics, and telecommunications. He’s now implementing a new software framework for the instrumentation division of the observatory. This is being applied initially to the SHOC systems and the 1.9-metre Cassegrain Spectrograph upgrade project.
