His research uses observations from the MeerKAT telescope near Carnarvon (NC)\, which forms part of the international MeerKAT Fornax Survey\, to investigate how galaxies lose and redistribute their neutral hydrogen gas as they interact with the environment of the Fornax cluster of galaxies. His work combines radio observations with optical and ultraviolet data to understand the physical processes shaping galaxies\, with a particular focus on ram-pressure stripping and the formation of extended one-sided gas tails. He is interested in how astronomers can use observations across the light spectrum to reconstruct the history and evolution of galaxies that are millions of light-years away. \nAbstract: “How Extragalactic Astronomy Is Done”\nHow do astronomers learn about galaxies that are millions of light-years away? We cannot visit them\, touch them\, or observe them up close. Instead\, we collect faint signals across the light spectrum\, turn them into images and measurements\, and use these clues to piece together what is happening in a distant galaxy. In this interactive seminar\, you will take on the role of astronomers investigating a real galaxy. Starting with observations at different light wavelengths\, we will ask what each piece of evidence can tell us about the galaxy\, test competing explanations\, and see how astronomers use observations\, models\, and a little detective work to uncover the physical processes shaping this galaxy. The audience will be invited to make predictions and scientific decisions along the way\, experiencing how an astronomer moves from a set of observations to a scientific conclusion—and why\, in astronomy\, the answer is often less straightforward than it first appears. \n

She is affiliated with both the SAAO and SARAO\, and is a fellow in the High Energy Physics\, Cosmology & Astrophysics Theory (HEPCAT) group. Her research focus is on X-ray binaries\, primarily studying neutron star X-ray binaries from a multi-wavelength perspective. She is a member of South Africa’s Astronomy Community Task Team (ACTT) and a member of the Golden Key International Honours Society. Dr Gasealahwe is a recipient of the South African Women in Science Awards DSI – Esther Mahlangu Doctoral fellowships (2024) and a keynote motivational speaker. \nAbstract: Astronomical objects often remain singular\, unaffected by other objects. Sometimes\, objects are paired and may even interact with each other; these are known as binary systems. X-ray binaries are systems with either a black hole or neutron star as the primary object\, and a companion star as the secondary object. During intense interactions\, X-ray explosions occur\, one of the brightest X-ray sources in the night sky. In this talk\, we will uncover the nature of X-ray binaries and how they are observed. I will present results from the youngest known X-ray binary\, Circinus X-1\, the Africa nebula. Moreover\, discuss how it may tie together what we know about X-ray binaries with either black hole or neutron star primary objects. \n

Currently a post-doctoral fellow at Stellenbosch University\, he develops simulations of the early universe to predict observable results for both current and future missions such as those scheduled for South Africa’s SKA and HERA observatories. His work largely aims to constrain the rate and intensity with which the first stars and galaxies formed by simulating their impact on the large-scale universe\, with hopes of bettering our understanding of early structure formation as well as pushing the theoretical limits of our current cosmological model. \nAbstract: “How Did We Get Here? From the Big Bang to the First Stars” \nWe find ourselves residing on a planet that is one of many orbiting an average star within a galaxy that is just one of trillions scattered throughout the cosmos. However\, we simultaneously know that our universe is expanding as a result of its explosive formation nearly 14 billion years ago\, during an event known as the Big Bang. This then begs the question — how did the universe evolve from an incredibly hot\, dense early state into the awe-inspiring galaxies\, clusters\, and voids we see now? In this talk\, I will cover the first billion years of the universe’s history to illustrate how this transition came to be\, why it is important for our understanding of cosmology\, as well as the techniques astronomers are currently using to research this epoch of cosmic history \n

DESCRIPTION:Join us for Open Nights at the South African Astronomical Observatory (NRF/SAAO) in Cape Town\, held on the second and fourth Saturday of every month. \nEach evening begins with an engaging presentation on astronomy or a related field of science\, followed by a guided tour of the Observatory’s rich history—including our library\, museum\, and the historic 120-year-old McClean Telescope. \nWeather permitting\, guests will have the opportunity to enjoy stargazing through the McClean and additional smaller telescopes. \n\n\n\nGates open at 7:30 PM.\nFree entry for children aged 6 and under.\n\n\n\nPlease email cptbookings@saao.ac.za or call +27 21 447 0025 if you have any queries regarding bookings. \n\n\n\n\nSpeaker: TBA \nBio: TBA \nAbstract: TBA \n
