SUMMARY:NRF|SAAO Cape Town Open Night
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Open Nights at the South African Astronomical Observatory (NRF/SAAO) in Cape Town\, held on the second and fourth Saturday of every month. \nEach evening begins with an engaging presentation on astronomy or a related field of science\, followed by a guided tour of the Observatory’s rich history—including our library\, museum\, and the historic 120-year-old McClean Telescope. \nWeather permitting\, guests will have the opportunity to enjoy stargazing through the McClean and additional smaller telescopes. \n\n\n\nGates open at 7:30 PM.\nFree entry for children aged 6 and under.\n\n\n\nPlease email cptbookings@saao.ac.za or call +27 21 447 0025 if you have any queries regarding bookings. \n\n\n\n\nSpeaker: Colton Feathers \n \nBio: Colton Feathers is an American theoretical cosmologist whose research focuses on simulations of the first stars and galaxies. Currently a post-doctoral fellow at Stellenbosch University\, he develops simulations of the early universe to predict observable results for both current and future missions such as those scheduled for South Africa’s SKA and HERA observatories. His work largely aims to constrain the rate and intensity with which the first stars and galaxies formed by simulating their impact on the large-scale universe\, with hopes of bettering our understanding of early structure formation as well as pushing the theoretical limits of our current cosmological model. \nAbstract: “How Did We Get Here? From the Big Bang to the First Stars” \nWe find ourselves residing on a planet that is one of many orbiting an average star within a galaxy that is just one of trillions scattered throughout the cosmos. However\, we simultaneously know that our universe is expanding as a result of its explosive formation nearly 14 billion years ago\, during an event known as the Big Bang. This then begs the question — how did the universe evolve from an incredibly hot\, dense early state into the awe-inspiring galaxies\, clusters\, and voids we see now? In this talk\, I will cover the first billion years of the universe’s history to illustrate how this transition came to be\, why it is important for our understanding of cosmology\, as well as the techniques astronomers are currently using to research this epoch of cosmic history \n

\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker: Mikhail de Villiers \n \nBio:  \nMikhail de Villiers is a PhD student at the University of Cape Town and with the SAAO. His research involves extraplanar and diffuse gas in different galaxy environments where he is performing a detailed study trying to understand the morphology\, distribution\, kinematics and origins of neutral atomic Hydrogen in different galaxy environments. \nAbstract: “Gassed Up: The role of gas in Galaxy Evolution” \nMikhail will take you on a captivating journey where we understand the importance of gas in galaxies\, where it can come from and how we can study it in its multiphase nature. He will share some of his own research showing how primordial gas in the universe shapes the life cycle of a galaxy. Join us for a spectacular journey through the cosmos\, from the grand-design spiral galaxies we see to the invisible clouds of hydrogen that shape their past\, present and future. Discover how galaxies recycle matter to exist as complex ecosystems and learn why astronomers believe galaxies must be acquiring fresh gas to continue to survive. Using South Africa’s very own MeerKAT telescope\, we can detect this elusive hydrogen and uncover structures that are unable to be seen by optical telescopes. From enormous gas disks extending far beyond the stars to denser structures intertwined with the stellar regions\, MeerKAT reveals a hidden side of the universe.

His research explores how rocky planets form\, evolve\, and become potentially habitable by linking planetary interiors\, atmospheres\, climate\, and observations of exoplanets. He earned a B.A. in Astronomy from Dartmouth College and is passionate about science communication\, sustainability\, and making astronomy accessible to wider audiences. \nAbstract: “How to Build a Habitable World: A Cosmic Recipe for Planets\, Atmospheres\, and Life” \nWhat makes a planet habitable? It is not just being at the right distance from a star. A planet’s ability to support life depends on its whole history: how it formed\, what it is made of\, how its interior evolved\, what gases it released\, and whether its climate stayed stable over time. \nThis talk will take you from the first moments of planet formation to the atmospheres of alien worlds. We will explore giant impacts\, magma oceans\, volcanoes\, Venus-like greenhouse worlds\, frozen planets\, tidally locked “eyeball” planets\, and the TRAPPIST-1 system. We will also discuss how telescopes like the James Webb Space Telescope can read the “barcode” of a planet’s atmosphere from light-years away. By the end\, we will see why the search for life is really the search for planetary stories. \n

She is a recipient of the South African Women in Science Awards DSI–Ndoni Mcunu Doctoral Fellowship (2023). Alongside with her research\, Munira is a science communicator and has presented at Soapbox Science CT 2025. \nAbstract: The Life Cycle of A Galaxy \nGalaxies come in many different shapes and sizes. From blue\, fluffy dwarf irregular galaxies to giant ellipticals at the centre of clusters. Many factors\, such as how much gas the galaxy has access to and where it lives\, can shape the evolution of galaxies to create this diversity. In this talk\, Munira will share the life cycle of  galaxies – how they form stars\, stay alive by acquiring more gas\, interact with each other and eventually shut down. She will share her research on the hydrogen gas content of galaxies using data from one of the deepest surveys on MeerKAT and why this gas is so important for galaxies! \n

\n\n\n\n\nSpeaker: Koustav Konar \n \n  \nBio:  \nKoustav Konar is a PhD student at Stellenbosch University and the University of Groningen\, working in observational cosmology. He currently works with an enigmatic astrophysical transient called Fast Radio Bursts to test the standard model of cosmology using data from the upcoming SKA telescopes. \nAbstract: \nA Long-Expected Journey: Using Cosmic Beacons to find the Universe’s Missing Matter \nFor over a century\, we have meticulously mapped the Universe\, guided by human curiosity and generations of careful observations. The culmination of this centuries-old lore is the standard model of cosmology\, which has been remarkably successful at predicting everything from the birth of stars to the evolution of galaxies. Yet\, as our vision grows clearer\, subtle cracks have emerged from the shadows. \nOne such persistent puzzle is the Missing Baryon Problem\, where a vast portion of the matter predicted by our theories remains unseen. It is as if we have opened a new puzzle box\, only to find that half the contents are missing\, leaving the final picture incomplete. \nJoin us as we journey through the milestones and mysteries of our cosmic discoveries. We will explore why our current maps are failing us and how we use Fast Radio Bursts as cosmic beacons to hunt down these scattered fragments of our Universe. \n
