Her current work involves using machine learning to explore how mode-changing pulsars switch between multiple stable states in quasi-periodic manner.  She is passionate about making science accessible to the public and is an Open Night Coordinator here at the SAAO.\nAbstract:  \nIn this talk\, we will explore the weird and wonderful world of radio pulsars: what are they and how can we study them? Why do they seem to be the cosmic lighthouses of the Universe? We will go over the very basics of pulsars\, from how they’re born to current research being done on all varieties of pulsars\, and most importantly\, how interesting they are! We will end the talk with a short discussion on how radio astronomy is advancing in South Africa\, and how opportunities for students to enter radio astronomy are more available and inclusive than ever. \n  \n

Her research focuses on the hydrogen gas in galaxies\, the raw material that fuels the formation of new stars. By studying how this gas relates to star formation\, she aims to better understand how and why galaxies change and evolve over the history of the Universe. \nAbstract: The Universe Beyond What the Eye Can See: Astronomy Across the Electromagnetic Spectrum \nWhat would the Universe look like if we could see radio waves? Or X-rays? Or infrared light?  Our eyes only see a tiny fraction of the light that fills the cosmos. By observing the cosmos at different wavelengths\, astronomers can uncover things that are completely invisible to us. From energetic gamma rays to brilliant blue stars and cold hidden skeletons of gas\, each part of the electromagnetic spectrum reveals hidden secrets of the Universe. \nIn this talk\, we will journey across the electromagnetic spectrum and explore how astronomers use different telescopes to study exploding stars\, black holes\, stellar nurseries\, and gas between galaxies. We will see how the same astronomical objects can look drastically different depending on the wavelength at which they are observed\, and how combining these observations allows us to build a more complete picture of the Universe\, while highlighting some of the world’s most exciting telescopes. \n

His project involves building and qualifying the Laser Frequency Comb that has been under development since 2023. He has a passion for Instrumentation and PRV research\, as well as a love for Astronomy in South Africa. \nAbstract:  \n” Commissioning and Qualifying a Titanium Sapphire-Based Laser Frequency Comb for Precision Radial Velocity measurements with SALT’s High Resolution Spectrograph” \nLaser Frequency Combs (LFC) are used to calibrate High Resolutions Spectrographs (HRS) by providing a set of narrow\, equally spaced\, and atomically referenced calibration lines. The SALT LFC project will enable Precision Radial Velocity Science (PRV) to done using SALT’s own HRS\, mainly searching for exo-planets. A number of redesigns and improvements have been made to the LFC in 2026\, extending the coverage of the comb across the HRS Red channel (550 – 890 nm). We have improved the stability of the system\, and are working towards the comb being fully automated. This will allow for full commissioning of the instrument with on-sky RV standard stars\, in preparation for the PLATO mission that will be launching in March 2027. The LFC will be an essential tool for exoplanet science\, and presents an exciting prospect for South Africa to meaningfully contribute to the PRV scientific community. \nIn this talk Malcolm will discuss the theory behind searching for exo-planets\, how LFCs work\, the design of the SALT LFC\, and results from monitoring its performance in both the lab and on-sky. He will also touch on the work that they hope to accomplish in the coming year. \n

His research focuses on galaxy evolution and the regulation of star formation in starburst galaxies. He is currently using data from large survey projects conducted with the MeerKAT telescope in the Karoo to investigate how some of the fastest-evolving galaxies use and replenish their gas reservoirs. His work aims to build a better understanding of how these galaxies sustain their intense star formation and\, ultimately\, what they may evolve into. \nAbstract:  \nCosmic Tantrums: A look into hyperactive galaxies \nSome galaxies behave. Others decidedly do not. Some are churning out new stars at rates far higher than normal. Others unleash enormous jets of high-energy material into space. Some collide with one another\, while others gradually run out of the fuel they need to form new stars. But why? Why do some galaxies we observe have such a violent and turbulent nature\, while others\, like our own Milky Way\, appear relatively peaceful in comparison? In this talk\, I’ll start with the basics: what exactly is a galaxy\, and what is it made of? From there\, I’ll introduce some of the more restless galaxy variants: starburst galaxies and active galactic nuclei. What causes these galaxies to suddenly become so active? What role do things like gas\, star formation\, supermassive black holes\, and galaxy collisions play? Can these violent episodes ultimately cause a galaxy to die out\, and perhaps most importantly: could our own Milky Way one day throw a tantrum of its own..? \n

His research uses observations from the MeerKAT telescope near Carnarvon (NC)\, which forms part of the international MeerKAT Fornax Survey\, to investigate how galaxies lose and redistribute their neutral hydrogen gas as they interact with the environment of the Fornax cluster of galaxies. His work combines radio observations with optical and ultraviolet data to understand the physical processes shaping galaxies\, with a particular focus on ram-pressure stripping and the formation of extended one-sided gas tails. He is interested in how astronomers can use observations across the light spectrum to reconstruct the history and evolution of galaxies that are millions of light-years away. \nAbstract: “How Extragalactic Astronomy Is Done”\nHow do astronomers learn about galaxies that are millions of light-years away? We cannot visit them\, touch them\, or observe them up close. Instead\, we collect faint signals across the light spectrum\, turn them into images and measurements\, and use these clues to piece together what is happening in a distant galaxy. In this interactive seminar\, you will take on the role of astronomers investigating a real galaxy. Starting with observations at different light wavelengths\, we will ask what each piece of evidence can tell us about the galaxy\, test competing explanations\, and see how astronomers use observations\, models\, and a little detective work to uncover the physical processes shaping this galaxy. The audience will be invited to make predictions and scientific decisions along the way\, experiencing how an astronomer moves from a set of observations to a scientific conclusion—and why\, in astronomy\, the answer is often less straightforward than it first appears. \n

She is affiliated with both the SAAO and SARAO\, and is a fellow in the High Energy Physics\, Cosmology & Astrophysics Theory (HEPCAT) group. Her research focus is on X-ray binaries\, primarily studying neutron star X-ray binaries from a multi-wavelength perspective. She is a member of South Africa’s Astronomy Community Task Team (ACTT) and a member of the Golden Key International Honours Society. Dr Gasealahwe is a recipient of the South African Women in Science Awards DSI – Esther Mahlangu Doctoral fellowships (2024) and a keynote motivational speaker. \nAbstract: Astronomical objects often remain singular\, unaffected by other objects. Sometimes\, objects are paired and may even interact with each other; these are known as binary systems. X-ray binaries are systems with either a black hole or neutron star as the primary object\, and a companion star as the secondary object. During intense interactions\, X-ray explosions occur\, one of the brightest X-ray sources in the night sky. In this talk\, we will uncover the nature of X-ray binaries and how they are observed. I will present results from the youngest known X-ray binary\, Circinus X-1\, the Africa nebula. Moreover\, discuss how it may tie together what we know about X-ray binaries with either black hole or neutron star primary objects. \n
