Non-medical scientists’ response to the COVID-19 pandemic

The world has changed since the COVID-19 pandemic broke out a few months ago. The pandemic created a crisis that has been (and continues to be) devastating. Numerous lives have unfortunately been claimed, with countless jobs lost and the economies of several countries around the globe plummeting. The medical science community has been in the front line to fight the pandemic by providing treatment and care for infected individuals. However, other science communities, which are not directly involved in medical science, have made an effort to stay relevant in the face of the crisis – by actively contributing their skills and expertise, and adapting to provide solutions. In particular, the astronomy community, such as the likes of SARAO (South Africa Radio Astronomy Observatory) and SAAO (South African Astronomy Observatory), has played, and continues to play, an important role in fighting the pandemic and/or in alleviating its effects. This webinar highlights:

  • The contributions of the astronomy community and other non-medical scientists
  • Future benefits of the current response efforts
