SAAO Cape Town Open Night

This week’s speaker: Mr. Tasheen Naicker

The SAAO Open Nights in Cape Town take place on the second and fourth Saturday of every month at 20:00.

All Open Nights will start with a presentation on topics of astronomy or physics. Then, visitors will be given an introduction to the historic McClean telescope, the observatory museum, and the library. If the weather is clear, there will be a chance for stargazing using telescopes set up for the night.

Speaker: 

Tasheen Naicker, a graduate of Wits University with a BSc in Aeronautical Engineering, embarked on a professional journey focused on product development. Since qualifying in 2006, he has made significant contributions to various companies, including Denel Dynamics in missile development, Carl Zeiss Optronics (now known as Hensoldt Optronics) specializing in Optical Systems and Sensors, and Reutech Radar Systems, recognized for its radar systems. As a Mechanical Design Engineer, his expertise has shaped an array of products associated with these companies. Presently, with nearly two years at SALT, Tasheen actively leads diverse projects, overseeing upgrade projects like Longslits/Calsys (Calibration System) upgrades and assisting with operational-level investigations, notably the SALT Coating Plant’s operations.

 

Talk Abstract: Engineering and Astronomy

The presentation will aim to explain engineering and its role in Astronomy. Specifically with an emphasis on where humankind is today, technologically, and why we are better equipped (now more than ever) to explore the unknown with very sophisticated equipment.
