He is also the podcast manager for The Cosmic Savannah\, hosted by Dr Jacinta Delhaize\, Dr Tshiamiso Makwela and Dr Daniel Cunnama. \nAbstract: Cataclysmic Variables and the Future of Gravitational Wave Astronomy with LISA \nCataclysmic Variable (CV) stars are some of the most fascinating binary systems in the universe\, where a white dwarf strips material from a companion star\, creating dramatic outbursts and high-energy phenomena. These systems are not just astrophysical curiosities; they are key laboratories for studying accretion\, binary evolution\, and even the sources of gravitational waves. While traditional telescopes reveal much about their light\, future space-based observatories like the LISA mission will allow us to study CV stars through an entirely new lens—by detecting the “ripples in spacetime” they produce. LISA\, the first space-based gravitational wave detector\, will open a new window into the dynamics of compact binaries\, helping us uncover the hidden population of CVs and their role in shaping the cosmos.

Along the way\, we will uncover how pulsars have become crucial tools for probing the universe\, from testing theories of gravity to mapping the interstellar medium. The talk will culminate with an exploration of how we are currently searching for and discovering new pulsars using the MeerKAT radio telescope\, situated in the Karoo region of the Northern Cape of South Africa.\n\nFast radio bursts\, or FRBs\, are incredibly bright\, fleeting flashes of radio emission. They originate from enormous distances\, far beyond our own Galaxy\, and in just a single millisecond\, they release as much energy as the Sun produces over three days. Nearly a thousand FRBs have been detected so far\, yet the cause behind them remains one of astronomy’s biggest mysteries. In this talk\, we’ll explore how two telescopes here in South Africa are helping us work towards uncovering the origins of these enigmatic bursts.\n\nKira Hanmer is a PhD student at the University of Cape Town. Her recently completed Masters research was on fast radio bursts – short-lived\, bright flashes of radio emission from far outside the Milky Way.\n\nVenu Prayag is a PhD student at the University of Cape Town\, researching “cosmic lighthouses” known as pulsars outside of our own Milky Way. Venu was also the chair of the ambassadors for the International Astronomical Union General Assembly 2024\, the “World Cup” of astronomy\, which took place in Cape Town in August last year.

His interests lie in understanding various astrophysical phenomena with the help of pulsars. He is actively involved in Pulsar Timing Array collaborations and has contributed to the recent evidence of nanohertz gravitational waves in various datasets. \nAbstract: \nImagine a star so dense that a teaspoon of its material would outweigh Table Mountain\, and spinning hundreds of times per second\, emitting a beam of radiation like lighthouses. While it’s hard to imagine\, such exotic objects do exist and they are known as pulsars. These super exciting objects\, born as a result of explosions of massive stars are more than just astronomical curiosities. They act as ultra-precise cosmic clocks\, helping us test the limits of Einstein’s theory of relativity\, detect gravitational waves and understand the interstellar medium properties.  In this talk\, we’ll listen to the inspiring story of the discovery of pulsars and try to understand how these cosmic marvels have become tools for understanding the deepest laws of physics\, with the help of some of the greatest instruments made by mankind. \n
