The Grubb company was started by the young engineer Thomas Grubb in Dublin around 1830. It gradually expanded to the point where Thomas and his son Howard were entrusted to build some of the largest and most advanced telescopes of the 19th century. When Howard Grubb became too old to continue the business in 1925, it was taken over and re-organised by Sir Charles Parsons, the steam turbine pioneer and third son of the celebrated telescope constructor, William Parsons, 3rd Earl of Rosse. Over sixty years the company produced some of the most important telescopes of the 20th century. |
