Orion rising over Sutherland

Orion rising over Sutherland

The turret-shaped dome of South Africa's largest telescope of 74" (1.9m) aperture, against the backdrop of the striking constellation of Orion, dominating the summer skies in the southern hemisphere, constantly climbing during this ±4 hour exposure. At some stage during the exposure, the astronomer left his "mark", shining his torch while checking on the condition of the sky.

(The previous evening I took a similar picture over the 40" dome.)
